PM lays the foundation for the Kochi Metro Rail Project

After laying the foundation stone for the Kochi Metro Rail Project at Ernakulam Marine Drive on Thursday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh brought out the importance of such Metro Rail Projects in the country. By 2031, the population living in cities and towns would scale up to 40% which means that about 60 crore people will be there in cities and towns. An efficient public transport system is a must and “is critical to the orderly growth and development of Indian cities”. The Centre supports in preparing the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for metro rails for cities with population over 2 million. For 12 cities, he said, such DPRs have already been prepared. Kochi is the eighth Indian city with a metro rail network. The Kochi Metro with 25 km stretch will cost more than Rs.5, 180 crore out of which the share of the Centre will be Rs.1000 crore. A metro rail eases traffic congestion on the road; it helps tackling other challenges like air pollution and ever increasing road accidents. But metro rail alone is not sufficient. He said: “We need to build in our cities multimodal transport systems that efficiently integrate different modes of public transport like buses and trains”.  In fact, the Prime Minister referred to the assistance the Centre is providing for the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit System project in 11 cities with a network of over 437 km at a cost of more than Rs 5,500 crore.  Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the Government has granted 15,000 low-floor and semi-low floor buses for mission cities at the cost of Rs.4,700 crore and more.   Kochi alone has been sanctioned 200 buses.
