
In a press release, Mr.D.Mahadevaiah, Traffic Manager in-charge of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) stated that the port has handled the largest consignment of timber logs. On September 3, the vessel m.v. Niamul Mowla called at the port with 19,673 timber logs weighing about 22,000 tonnes. The consignment was imported by about 90 people belonging to Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra. After completing the unloading, the vessel is scheduled to leave on September 15. While the clearing and forwarding agents are Export Trade Links and Sri Ganesh Shipping Agency, Dix Shipping is the stevedores and steamer agents. The press release also refers to the statements of Mr.P.Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, mentioning about all the efforts the port takes in promoting business by attracting the traditional cargo like timber and also about the infrastructure provision for handling bulk cargo. Recently, the port received a delegation from the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce, Kannur and Mr.P.Tamilvanan mentioned about the support the delegation had promised from Malabar region in using the New Mangalore Port to transport cargo like timber,plywood, textiles and edible oil.
