The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to levy user development fees in the Kolkata airport which it owns and maintains. A passenger on a domestic flight will have to pay Rs 400 and one on an international flight has to part with a sum of Rs 1000. In addition, AAI has another proposal of increasing the landing fee for the domestic and international airlines, an increase of 48% and of 118% respectively. The increased charges are said to come into effect from November 1, this year. The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has approved the proposal of the increases. Any increase in any fee, it is generally known, results in, finally, an increase in the fare the passenger bears. True to the common experience, a senior executive of a private airline, had said that the “entire cost increase will be passed on to the passenger”. The cargo rates are no exception. AAI has a proposal to increase the rate by 8% from November 1, this year. The proposal is extended to next three consecutive years, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
