Congestion is a challenge that the Port has to deal with effectively in the interests of the efficient functioning of the port. The challenge gains in complexity when there are erring transporters without proper documents. The Chennai Port Trust authorities are exploring the ways to deal with them seeking cooperation from the terminal operators and Customs and the Traffic Police. Normally, Chennai port receives about 1500 loaded containers and it is almost a common sight to see them stranded along the narrow road up to the Ernavur junction. Sometimes, during congestion, the trucks are seen stationed helter skelter up to Manali or the Madhavaram junction. Naturally, long unpredictable wait leads the truck drivers and cleaners to engage themselves in their daily routine like bathing and washing. After a meeting with the stakeholders, the decision was taken to allow only the vehicles with right documents and deny entry to the other vehicles. It was also decided to use stickers to differentiate the erring transporters. The assistance from the traffic police would be used to tackle the vehicles without proper documents. The Corporation and Chennai Port Trust must provide basic infrastructure to the Tiruvottiyur parking yard so that it could receive trailers and the loaded containers.
