Experts say that the recent revision in the cabotage law will prove a boon not only to the Vallarpadam Terminal but also to the entire logistics sector in Kerala. But much has to be done before reaping the fruits of this relaxation by the Union Cabinet. First and foremost, the infrastructure must be developed adequately so that opportunities of trade will flow in continuously. As of now, the connectivity is not sufficient enough to achieve more volume of business. Mr.N.A. Muhammed Kutty, MD, Falcon Infrastructure Limited, right observed: “By relaxing the norms, foreign vessels could directly reach Vallarpadam. A dedicated rail cargo corridor should be formed from Vallarpadam to Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad for better connectivity”. The growth of the Vallarpadam terminal, in realizing its target and full potential of one million twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) within a short span of one year will, in its wake, bring plenty of opportunities of business to the ports like Vizhinjam, Azheekkal , Beypore and to the other minor ports as well. Moreover, the Kerala Government has a proposal of constructing a logistics park in Kochi as a part of its ‘Emerging Kerala’, a very well-thought out practical mission for the development and growth of Kerala. From what the experts feel, it appears that the relaxation in the cabotage law will not go amiss.
