CPT invites EoI for dredging contract

Dredging for the maintenance of the  depth of the channels and the basins, an inevitable commitment for any port to sustain itself, generally costs much to the port management. Innovative strategies have to be continuously evolved so that the dredging cost does not erode into the profit of the port. In fact, earlier, the port trust sought assistance from the Ministry to purchase a dredger but in vain.  As of now, the dredging is taken care of by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) for a period of three years under contract from 2011-12 to 2013-14. Afterthe commissioning of the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal, the dredging expenditure grew manifold though the revenue did not flow in enough to match it. The port management began to explore the ways and means of reducing the dredging expenditure. First, it thought of awarding the dredging contract for a period of twelve years.  Next, being advised by KITCO, it began to think in terms of utilizing the dredged materials to generate revenue and also in terms of need-based dredging.     A key official of the Port Trust said: “The study (by KITCO) further reveals that the materials can be used as raw material for manufacturing bricks and tiles”. Naturally, it is a good cost effective waste management. Now, the Port management has called for Expression of Interest (EoI) for the dredging contract for a long period of 12 years.
