Mormugao Port neglects to control coal dust pollution

Goa’s Environment Minister Alina Saldanha has accused Mormugao Port Trust of neglecting the directions of both Goa State Pollution Control Board and the High Court towards controlling the coal dust pollution in the port city of Vasco. She said: “I will visit the site along with a team after the monsoon and examine the issue thoroughly”. The pollution monitoring stations set up by the GSPCB record high levels of dust pollution. The port has not kept up the promise it made to build a closed shed for handling coal. Many residents have already approached the High Court for relief which is yet to reach them. The Minister has said that some monitoring will be done by the GSPCB such as maintaining the coal stack height.
