The Union Minister for Shipping Mr. G. K. Vasan inaugurated the Vehicle Traffic Management System at Chennai Port and talked about the importance of such a system in all ports. First, the system increases the efficiency of surveillance effectively and tracks the movements of the ships in the port limits. This necessary surveillance can be effective for about two kilometers and it can be extended to nearly 40 nautical miles with advanced software. Emphasizing the importance of the system, he said all the major ports must have the system installed. He added: “We need to keep our boundaries secure”. The VTMS has certain functional similarities with the ‘black box’ of the aircraft. Equipped with the auto identification system, radar system and communication links, it proves a very useful device to the operators to monitor the traffic of the vessels. Till now, the port has been monitoring the vessel traffic through VHF contracts, the Minister said. .
