First half of 2012 records a drop in piracy, IMB

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) International Maritime Bureau has pointed out a drop in world piracy in the first half of 2012, from 266 of the corresponding period in 2011 to 177.  The major reason attributed to this decrease is said to be decline in Somali piracy. As against 163 in the first half of 2011, the Somali piracy has fallen to 69 in 2012. The present decline in Somali Piracy frequency does not, however, totally eliminate a threat from them. Mr. Pottengal Mukundan, Director of IMB, said: “Somali pirate attacks cover a vast area, from Southern Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Sea and Somali Basin, threatening all shipping routes in the North West Indian Ocean.” The decline in Somali Piracy has been attributed to the efforts and the counter piracy tactics employed by the international navies and pirate action groups. Another an effective cause is the use of Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel (PCASP). IMB Piracy Reporting Centre is the only world body collecting and disseminating information relating to piracy and armed robbery 24 hours a day.
