Dockers of Nehru Port postpone strike until July 9

The strike by the dockworkers at APM Terminal’s Mumbai Terminal in Nhava Sheva Port, originally scheduled to begin today, has been postponed until July 9. The strike was to have been organized to protect the interests of those farmers who have give away their lands for port’s expansion under compensation; but the compensations have been unduly delayed. The decision to postpone the strike was taken in the meeting of the trade unions.  If the issue remains unsolved and if the strike takes place, needless to say, it will definitely affect the shippers first and the national economy next.  The port is carrying out about 60% of India’s containerized trade; in addition, the port has some plans of expansion to accelerate its growth.  Strike, short or long, is bound to affect the trade of the port.
