Chennai Port’s timely strategy to obtain more power

The Chennai Port, it is understood, gets 15 lakh units from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) every month; the grid itself being in shortage of energy, the port is driven to think of effective alternative sources of energy. Windmills seem to have caught their attention, rightly at that. It plans to erect windmills in the port’s breakwaters to have the supplementary supply of energy, generated though them. The private players must be involved and they should design, erect and operate them successfully. The power generated through the windmills must be sent to the grid from where, through TNEB transmission lines, the power will reach the port. Since the port has to allot some sufficient area on the breakwater on lease for some specified period, say, for 30 years, the plan is likely to include some revenue sharing. Of course, with promising prospects, the private players will certainly welcome this project. For example, Mr. Ramesh Kymal, Managing Director, Gamesa Wind Turbines Private Limited, is said to have remarked that the project is good one; however, it needs study.
