VOC Port breaks its own record

V. O. Chidambaranar Port created a national record in the handling of hard wood logs on Dec. 5. A quantity of 10,867 Metric Tonnes of hard wood logs of 11,530 MCBM was discharged from the vessel “mv Tharinee Naree,” the highest ever achieved in a single day in the major ports of the country, thus breaking its own record set on Oct. 4 by handling 8,859 metric tonnes of  hard wood timber discharged from the vessel “Glorious Sentosa”.

M/s. St. John Freight System was the vessel agents / stevedores and clearing agents for the vessel. M/s. Farlin Timbers Pte.Ltd., Singapore, is the supplier of this consignment, meant for various importers throughout Tamil Nadu

Mr. S. Natarajan, Chairman i/c, has said in a Press release that this achievement was possible due to high level of mechanization introduced in the port for handling the cargo – 4 Nos. of specially designed log grapple attachment imported from Germany and 4 Volvo trucks for shore handling, vast open space at the berth and availability of high productivity labour.

So far during the current financial year 2011-12 up to November, the port handled 184.7 lakh tonnes of cargo and the cargo handled during the corresponding period of previous year 2010-11 (up to November, 2011) was 181.1lakh tonnes, which represents 1.99% growth in traffic during the current year.

The port’s export traffic has picked up considerably due to handling of more volume of dry bulk cargoes like ilmenite sand, garnet sand, sugar, raw sugar, machinery, construction material, liquid cargoes like sulphuric acid and containerized cargo. Similarly, import cargo also showed improved performance in handling more thermal coal and industrial coal, copper concentrate, timber logs, pulses, gypsum; liquid cargo like naphtha, LPG, diesel, VCM, liquid ammonia, fertilizers like urea, DAP and fertilizer raw material like rock phosphate and containerized cargo.
