The International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) – UK through its India branch conducted a two-day seminar on Professionalism, Training and Education in Chennai on Dec. 7 and 8.IIMS is an independent, non-political organization promoting professionalism, recognition and training of Marine Surveyors worldwide.
The seminar was well attended by both local as well as international delegates from a wide range of maritime verticals right from surveyors , ship owners and managers, salvage companies and salvage consultants, P & I Clubs, Club Correspondents, IIISLA and training institutions to name a few.
The IIMS defines marine surveying as: “The service provided to maritime and transport organizations in general and the production of guidance reports for all other bodies connected with maritime operations or maritime trade”.
The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. T. S. Sridhar, Additional Chief Secretary in-charge of Education, Tamil Nadu Government.
The deliberations on the first day were mainly on the Code of Conduct of Marine Surveyors and ways and means to raise the professional standards. Presentations by Mr. AWJ Fernandez made a special mark .
The technical paper presentation on a wide range of subjects from cargo evaporation losses to salvage, containers inspections and various legal issues concerned with the Marine Surveyors drew great attention from the delegates.
Besides industry experts, young cadets from Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training and AMET also attended the seminar to enrich their knowledge on marine surveying.
During the seminar two senior personalities – Mr. Sanjeev Bhandari and Mr. K. Shankar – were felicitated with honorary memberships for their support to the Institute.
On the arrangements for the seminar by the IIMS India branch, Mr. John Lawrence, CEO of IIMS, said: “Whenever I come to India, I am always amazed at the overwhelming enthusiasm of the Indian members of the Institute for knowledge. The Indian branch did a fantastic job and I congratulate Regional Director Milind Tambe of Troupe 7 and his team who not only put the conference together, but ensured it ran impeccably. I would mention Mr. P. Sridharan whose good humour and co-ordination of speakers was a feature of this outstanding event.”
Capt. Zarir Irani, the Regional Director UAE of IIMS UAE branch, stated that the Indian branch has raised the bar once again with this conference and it is now up to all other branches of IIMS to excel.
The Next IIMS India Seminar is scheduled for the latter part of the year 2014.
