Mumbai Port Trust earlier signed an agreement in December 2007 with ICTPL, a joint venture of Gammon India and Dragados of Spain to execute Mumbai’s Offshore Container Terminal project on BOOT basis and the major problem it faced was the connectivity. Being a city port, evacuation of the containers was the greatest hurdle Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) faced. With great difficulty, the railway authorities agreed to offer a four-hour window at Raoli near Wadala junction to move cargo by rail. Now, the concerned agencies like the Central Railways, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and MbPT have decided to lay tracks between Wadala and Kurla and from there, the rakes carrying containers will connect the national railway network. Another elevated road corridor project is nearing completion; once completed, containers will move by the road as well to and from the port.
These two connectivity projects will amply meet the demand for the container traffic to be generated by the container terminal and it will also be able to cater to the future expansion as well.
Better late than never.
