Gammon Infra wins projects from Mormugao Port Trust (MPT)

The Mormugao Port Trust has sent a letter of award to Gammon Infrastructure Projects Limited (“GIPL”). The award is for the projects worth INR about 2 billion to provide mechanized handling facilities for handling coal at Mormugao, Goa on Design, Build, Fund, Operate and Transfer basis. The project will have a minimum capacity of 2.33 million tonnes every year. The concession period, which includes the period for construction, for the project is 30 years. The construction period is two years. It is said that the Gammon Infrastructure need to invest about 300 crore to install equipment at berth 11of the port to achieve the target.

GIPL, an infrastructure developer holding company, is incorporated by Gammon India Limited with the objective of participating in the development of infrastructure projects on a public private partnership (PPP) basis. Today, GIPL leads Gammon Group in its involvement in the projects in various sectors such Roads and Expressways, Ports, Hydropower, Airports, Special Economic Zones, Water and Wastewater Management, Railways, Power Transmission lines and  Agriculture infrastructure.

Earlier, the Goa State Pollution Control Board had halted coal handling at two of Mormugao Port’s berths pointing out the complaints received from the local residents about the pollution there in the absence of mechanized handling facilities at the berths. The Goa High Court, however, has given time to the port till 2014 to install mechanized handling facilities and has permitted the port to continue to handle the coal.

It is always darkest before the dawn.
