As a mark of respect to the person who changed the profile of Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) over the years, the Indian Maritime University on Dec. 1 felicitated Mr. Sabyasachi Hajara, the outgoing Chairman and Managing Director of the Government-run shipping company, at its premises in Uthandi (Chennai).
Mr. Hajara is retiring from service on Dec. 31 after nearly four decades with SCI, and over seven years as its CMD.
In his address, Mr. Hajara, who is well-versed with shipping management, spoke at length about his experiences at SCI and his learning over the years. He urged the students aspiring for a shipping career to be conscious of the global nature of the sector and about the four As of managerial success namely Accomplishment, Affability, Advocacy and Authenticity.
He also spoke of the significance of Networking, Teambuilding and Leadership. He was all praise for Indian seafarers who, he said, are second to none in the world.
Mr. P. M. Abraham, former Secretary, MoS, and Dr. Jose Paul, former Chairman, Mormugao Port, graced the occasion and were felicitated by the IMU Vice- Chancellor, Prof. G. Raghuram, and the Chennai campus Director, Dr. P. Vijayan.
It was followed by an interactive session with the audience when students and faculty raised pertinent questions and were gracefully responded to by Mr. Hajara.
Dr. B. Swaminathan, Assistant Professor, SMM, proposed a vote of thanks.
Mr. Hajara graduated with First Class Honours in B.Sc. (Chemistry) from Kolkata University in 1970, obtained Post-Graduate Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management of Calcutta in 1973 and joined the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) on May 2, 1973. On Sept. 1, 2005, he assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of The Shipping Corporation of India.
Mr. Hajara has been a member of a number of Indian delegations at the Council and Assembly meetings of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where he has represented SCI and the Indian National Ship owners’ Association (INSA). Presently, he is the President of INSA and also a trustee on the Board of Trustees of the Mumbai Port Trust. He has been associated with a host of Management and Industry associations.
