Essar commissions mechanized bulk terminal at Paradip

Essar Ports  has commissioned its 16 million ton per annum (MTPA) mechanized dry bulk terminal at Paradip in Odisha, said Mr. Rajiv Agarwal, CEO and MD of the port company. The terminal will handle iron ore among other dry bulk cargo and would increase the revenue by 10-15% going forward, he added.

As part of the mechanization initiative, a long conveyor has been laid at the port terminal to connect it to the stock yard. This will help in decongesting the port area as it will not use any space inside. The cargo will not come through trucks or even rail, as it will mostly come through this conveyor without causing any extra congestion, he noted.

The new capacity has augmented the overall aggregate handling capacity of Essar Ports Limited to 104 million tons per annum.  “This is our first project on the East Coast of India and is a modern facility with best in class capabilities. The terminal will help achieve better handling rates, improve efficiencies with faster turn-around time for ships and would benefit the Paradip Port and its customers.”

Apart from the Paradip Terminal, Essar Ports has two operational ports at Hazira and Vadinar.

Speaking about iron ore, Mr. Agarwal said this raw material used in making steel will be used for coastal movement from Paradip to Hazira along with coal and other cargo. At the moment, iron ore cargo at Paradip or any other port has really dropped following the ban on iron ore exports.

Apart from Paradip, Essar’s Hazira Port is an all-weather, deep-draft port with 30 MMTPA of dry bulk and break bulk cargo handling capacity. Vadinar is also an all-weather, deep-draft port with 58 MMTPA of liquid cargo handling capacity.

It is also developing one terminal at Paradip which will be a coal berth of 14 MMTPA. The company is also setting up a dry bulk terminal at Salaya with a capacity of 20 MMTPA. Additionally, the company plans to expand its Hazira Port capacity by 20 MMTPA – taking its capacity to 50 MMTPA.
