Contribution shipping makes to the world, fantastic, CMD of SCI

Indian Maritime University at the Jadavpur campus did choose the most apt personality for the graduation ceremony, Mr. S.Hajara, Chairman and the Managing Director of the Shipping Corporation of India, the largest shipping company of the country. He impressed upon the graduates the inevitable importance of the shipping industry which is a great “silent” contributor to the economy of the world. Describing the contribution the shipping industry makes to the world as “absolutely fantastic”, he drew attention to the fact that 90% of the international trade is shouldered by the shipping industry. Producers and the consumers of the products are so far apart from each other that the connection between them is made possible largely through shipping. Without this significant bridging, he said, “half of the world would starve and the other half would freeze”.  Referring to the Indian economy, he rightly observed: “But for shipping the entire Indian economy would collapse in a matter of a day because there would be no crude to produce petrol and diesel”. Bringing out the other great merits of the shipping, he said that the people still had not known the singular fact that the shipping “reduced freighter charges in absolute terms” while prices rose everywhere. Again, the carbon emission, he said, by the shipping is  less compared with those of the other modes of transport;  it emission is 15% less than the road transport, 45% less than the railways and even compared  with aviation ,it has 1% less.

An honest tale speeds best, being plainly told.

Mr. MK.Ghosh, the Campus Director, informed the present that this would be the last batch to receive their degrees from Jadavpur and from the next year, the degrees would be awarded by the Indian Maritime University, Chennai.
