With the new conventions set to come into force such as Ballast Water Management, Green House Gases Reduction and certain mandatory requirements for Energy Efficiency Design Index that will certainly make running ships a more difficult and challenging task, ClassNK’s innovations through its R &D projects are certain to bring relief to the ship owners in reducing the cost in fuel consumption in particular. It has sunk huge investment in US $ 40 million already in 19 projects; it has committed $ 28 million in 22 projects in Japan. Mr. S.Sampath, General Manager (Survey) of ClassNK Office in Mumbai said that with all these projects finally, “it would be possible to achieve a huge saving in fuel consumption for the ship owners at the same time comply with the requirements of the convention. Some of these designs could also be incorporated in the existing ships which have been built prior to 2013when the conventions come into force”.
To mention just a few of the major projects underway that ultimately bring in reduction in fuel consumption are Minimal Water Ballast Ship, Micro Bubble Lubrication, Extremely low resistant hull coating, Small Size Dual Fuel Diesel Engine, Lithium Battery and Solar Panels Hybrid Power System etc.
Almost all connected with the shipping industry such as classification societies, ship builders, naval architects are diligently putting all efforts to find ways and means of making shipping more safe, secure and efficient on clean oceans. What more can shipping ask for?
