Bangladesh likely to permit India for transshipment through Ashuganj

The transshipment facility that Bangladesh had allowed India on a trial basis in September 2011 was suspended just after about a month in October pointing out the necessity to develop the infrastructure adequately enough for transshipment to continue through Ashuganj port. India had been seeking restoration of the transshipment from Bangladesh. Last week, the representatives of both the countries met and discussed the possibility of resuming the transshipment through Ashuganj.  According to the minutes of the meeting, “A fresh request may be communicated. Bangladesh may look into the possibilities of the issue of transshipment on humanitarian ground, upon consultation with all relevant stakeholders”. The two countries had discussed the “Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade” (PIWTT). Mr. C.B. Singh, the Shipping Adviser, represented the Indian side. The Shipping Adviser said that since three consignments had already been operated on a trial basis with the operators being ready to use their own equipment, it was but right that Bangladesh should permit transshipment to resume.
