The Indian chapter of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) is scheduled to be officially launched in Mumbai on Dec. 7 by Mr. S. Hajara, Chairman and Managing Director of the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI).
WISTA India was made possible due to the efforts of the founder members – Ms. Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Ms. Sumeet Sahi and Ms Rukhsana Vohra.
WISTA, tied up with Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping for conducting seminars, intends to conduct a programme every 6 months to cover issues of interest to members. Also on the cards are scholarship programmes to encourage new talent to join the industry.
WISTA is an international organisation for women in management positions involved in the maritime transportation business and related trades worldwide. It is a major player in attracting more women to the industry and in supporting women in management positions. With networking, education and mentoring in focus, it can enhance members’ competence and empower career success. It acts as a forum for women in the shipping industry. WISTA International also works for socially relevant topics – this year a working group has been formed to combat human trafficking.
WISTA is gradually growing and currently counts over 1,600 individual members in 34 National WISTA Associations (NWAs).
