Shipping Board urges the States to form maritime boards at the earliest

In the 120th Meeting of the National Shipping Board (NSB), the Chairman, NSB, Mr. P.V.K. Mohan informed that some maritime states have not yet formed the maritime boards. Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have set up the maritime boards and Mr. Mohan wanted the other states also to start their maritime boards. In a meeting to be held shortly of the Maritime State Development Council, the same urgency would be intimated to the states and he said: “We will keep pushing the States to set up their maritime boards”. He also said that some maritime states like Kerala and Gujarat on the west coast have shown keen interest in having major ports. With regard to new major ports in maritime states, Mr. Mohan said that the Central Government has taken up two major ports, one “at Sagar in West Bengal and Ramayapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on the east coast. Both these have been put on fast track and Prime Minister Office (PMO) is monitoring these projects”. He added: “We are awaiting responses from others as well. Once the responses come, we will send our technical team to examine the feasibility and take up these projects”.

The National Shipping Board is a permanent statutory body, established in 1959, to advise the Government of India on matters related to shipping and the very development of the maritime sector.
