Port Workers observe Demands Day on December 13

All the unions affiliated to Water Transport Workers Federation of India will observe Demands Day on December 13 in all the major ports of the country. The most significant demand pertains to early wage settlement; the Bipartite Wage Negotiating Committee must formulate a new wage structure and other related service conditions for the port and dock workers and they must be implemented from January for a period of five years.  It also demanded the implementation of the agreed items of categorization and classifications committee’s report of Mr. Afzul Purkar. On the Demands Day, the Chairmen of the Port Trusts would receive representation from the affiliated unions. The Federation, in addition to observing the Demands Day, has also positively responded by deciding to participate in the two day national strike on February 20 and 21, called by the 11 Central Trade Unions. These activities apart, the Federation is also conducting, according to the General Secretary of the Federation, Mr. Narendra Rao, 9th National Conference in Visakhapatnam in the month of June. With regard to the unwelcome situation at Haldia Dock Complex, the Federation is of the view that mechanization of all berths in the complex must be done fast to make the ports both operational and financially viable.
