‘Port of the Year’ Award for Kandla

Kandla Port was in the race for the international award with Port of Corpus Christi, USA, and Port of Singapore, Singapore.

Kandla Port, one of the leading major ports with sustained performance in the country, has won the prestigious ‘Port of the Year’ Award from 2012 International Seafarers’ Welfare Awards, funded by the ITF Seafarers’ Trust, UK.

Mr. P. D. Vaghela, Chairman, Kandla Port Trust (KPT), received the award at a glittering ceremony held on Nov. 28 in UK.

It may be noted here that KPT has registered a throughput of 82.5 million tonnes in 2011-12 period, the highest in the country and created history for handling more cargo.

Kandla Port was in the race for the international award with Port of Corpus Christi, USA, and Port of Singapore, Singapore.

The other ICSW International Seafarers’ Welfare Awards-2012 go to:

Seafarer Centre of the Year – Seafarers’ House Port Everglades, USA; Drop-in Centre of the Year – The International Drop-in Centre for Seafarers, Singapore;  Shipping Company of the Year – Shell Shipping and Welfare Personality of the Year (joint winners) – Rev Dennis Claughton & Fr Giacomo Martino.

The awards were presented at an event hosted by the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organisation, Mr Koji Sekimizu.

The judging panel members of the awards were: Mr. Masamichi Morooka, President of the International Shipping Federation and International Chamber of Shipping; Mr. David Cockcroft, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation, and Mr. Douglas Stevenson, Chairman of the International Christian Maritime Association.
