Exporters and importers from the Kongu Region comprising Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Salem have brought to the notice of Chennai Port Trust’s Marketing team that fixed rail service by CONCOR alone could divert cargoes to Chennai Port in future.
During the monthly help desk meeting organized by the Chennai Port Trust’s Marketing team in Coimbatore with the regional EXIM players on Nov. 21, which was primarily organized to secure sustained arrival of cargo for Chennai Port from the region, a representative of one of the prominent companies observed that though CONCOR had offered rail service to Chennai earlier, it was not regular as it depended mainly on the volume of cargo available for every trip.
CONCOR should instill confidence in the industry (or exporters in the region) by announcing regular and fixed day train services to Chennai Port, irrespective of the volumes available, he added.
“If the exporters here get a clear-cut idea about the rail services to Chennai Port, most of them would prefer to use them as the risk level is less in moving boxes through train when compared to road,” another representative noted during the meeting.
According to a member of Chennai Port Trust’s delegation, industries in the Coimbatore region use all the three ports – Kochi, Tuticorin and Chennai – depending on the destination of the cargo.
“Though we target all products from the region to increase our volume, coir products are the base commodity for rail service from here to Chennai,” the official added.
After successfully conducting the meeting, the Marketing team on Nov. 22 visited different industries in the region that are mainly exporting their goods, to woo them to the Chennai Port.
