Kolkata Port Trust claims INR 1,000 crore from HBT for breach of contract

Taking a firm stand, Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) on Thursday said that it would claim from Haldia Bulk Terminals INR 1,000 crore as compensation for “wrongfully abandoning” its contractual obligation of handling dry bulk cargo at berths 2 and 8 at the Haldia Port.  Mr. Manish Jain, the acting Chairman of KoPT said that they would also go in for re-tender for the operations at the berths 2 and 8.  He described the act of HBT as “illegal” and “arbitrary”.  KoPT would try to appoint a new contractor for the HBT abandoned berths and it plans to issue a letter of intent to the successful bidder by December and to start  operations in the berths 2 and 8 by March next year. The port management has been authorized by the KoPT to blacklist HBT and ABG also might have the same fate. Mr. Jain also pointed out that 80,000 tonnes of cargo have been cleared from the berths through J.M. Baxi and Company and they would go in for a tender for the remaining cargo-pile at berths 2 and 8.
