On receiving the ransom for the hijacked MV Asphalt Venture from Kenya waters in September 2010, the pirates released the ship; but, they have not yet released seven Indians and two of them are from Kerala. Mr. Oommen Chandy, the Kerala CM, has spoken about swapping the Somali pirates in Mumbai jails which they demand for the Indian hostages with Shipping Minister Mr. G.K.Vasan and the External Affair Minister, Mr. Salman Khurshid. He said that “there is no other way to save the lives of Indians who have been held hostages since September 28, 2010. What is the use in keeping these pirates in our jails?”. The CM had discussed the issue with the Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh and the Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram who are ready for the swapping deal. The Maharashtra government, however, insists upon having a trial before taking any final decision. The CM said he would write to the Maharashtra Chief Minister on this issue which he had been concerned with even when he was the leader of the Opposition in Kerala Assembly. Emphasizing the human aspect of the issue, he said: “An immediate action is needed to end the agony of the families of hostages. It is a humanitarian issue”.
