IFFCO jetty for waterway transport of fertilizer to port for export

An all-weather jetty to maintain waterway link with Paradip Port and adjoining coastal pockets is coming up along the Mahanadi in the port town for hassle-free handling of fertilizer and its by-products.

The cooperative fertilizer major IFFCO has drawn up a plan to bring up a jetty close to the plant site as transportation of goods by rail and road has become a cumbersome process. The Rs. 125-crore project would speed up the cargo movement, which would lead to enhancement of productivity. The proposed jetty would reduce transportation cost and as a result the fertilizer cost would be lesser to a certain degree, said officials.

Officials are of the view that waterway movement of cargos through the proposed jetty would be environment-friendly. “Our objective is to minimize the price of fertilizer in a State like Odisha which is principally regulated by agro-based economy. The jetty would have 6-lakh ton capacity per annum. With the commissioning of the jetty, there would be waterway transport of fertilizer to specific coastal pockets which are inaccessible either by rail or road”, said Mr. S. K. Gandhi, Senior General Manager, Indian Farmers’ Fertilizer Cooperative Limited, Paradip.

“At present the manufactured produce makes its way to the port for export purpose either through road and rail. It has become a costlier affair. Besides, road transport has become less dependable because of frequent traffic jams and unionization of transport sector. So we have decided to take recourse to waterway transport by way of jetty”, he told this reporter.

“Waterway movement of produce would reduce the pollution level also. Construction work of the jetty would get underway with the completion of technical formalities in this regard. We are ready with the Rs. 125-crore investment for the project. As the fertilizer plant is located close to the major port, the jetty project would come in handy”, he said.

The company has submitted a detailed project report of the jetty to the Pollution Control Board, Environment Impact Assessment body, besides State Transport authorities. We are waiting for clearance from Government agencies for the expeditious commissioning of the project.
