The Tuticorin South police have recovered three containers stuffed with knitwear and cloth after the container-laden lorries were illegally detained by the owner of the lorries in an attempt to collect the arrears of transportation charges.
According to police, the three lorries owned by one Marimuthu of Tuticorin had transported on Nov. 7 three containers, stuffed with knitwear and cloth worth Rs. 2.50 crores from Tirupur to Tuticorin, meant for export to a foreign country via VOC Port.
Instead of taking the containers to the Customs Office for the mandatory clearance and then to the harbour, Marimuthu took the lorries to his premises on Bypass Road as the Tirupur-based exporter had reportedly failed to settle the transportation charges on a few earlier occasions.
As the lorries did not reach the Customs Office the next day, the Tirupur-based exporter’s representative at Tuticorin filed a complaint with Tuticorin South Police, who recovered the lorries with the containers.
The police have filed a case against Marimuthu, his brother Murugan and lorry drivers Selvaraj, Muthukumar and Arumugam, saying that Marimuthu and his associates had caused loss to the tune of Rs. 2.50 crores to the Tirupur-based exporter by preventing the firm from exporting the knitwear and cloth to its customer in time.
