The woes of the cyclone Nilam hit Pratibha Cauvery, though have not seen an end, find a brief respite in getting a berth allotted by Chennai Port Trust at Jawahar Dock with the condition that the vessel must get its anchor and the chains fixed within the next 48 hours. Though the 31 crew members of the vessel are waiting for their dues from the company the financial position of which is said to be far from satisfactory, eight new members have arrived as replacement on board the ship. The new members have been accommodated in a hotel in George Town; however, the officials of the Mercantile Marine Department could not permit them to go on board the vessel till the vessel is declared fit and seaworthy. The experts seem to wonder at the decision of the new members to join the company; they said: “We do not know how these sailors agreed to join the group when everyone in the trade is aware of the financial status of the company”. It is learned from the informed sources that an agent was taking efforts to have the anchor fixed and also to assess the damage the vessel has suffered because of the cyclone through underwater survey. According to the marine experts, the vessel, being moved to an outer anchorage, would be managed, for the time being, by salvers who are experts and trained personnel. After the successful completion of the job by the salvers and after the pending dues for the existing crew has been fully cleared only, the new crew could get on board the vessel; in addition and above all, the owners of the ship have to complete the formalities found in the article of the agreement.
