Health hazards have always been closely associated with the handling of iron ore and coal dust in Chennai Port; in fact, on the order from Madras High Court, the port stopped handling these cargos to a great relief of the residents. Chennai Port, however, has approached the Supreme Court seeking intervention. The residents of Royapuram want that the handling of iron ore and coal dust must be permanently stopped in Chennai Port; instead, it can be shifted to Ennore Port. On Friday, a very large number of students and the residents formed a human chain to emphasize their demand. Mr. Earnest Paul, the working President of the Royapuram Residents’ Welfare Association said: “We have to keep our doors and windows shut. Otherwise, the dust would settle everywhere. After Chennai Port suspended handling of cargo, the problem has decreased”. Residents said that the Port promised to plant saplings to curb pollution; but nothing has been done. The Association plans to stage demonstrations stressing the importance of shifting the handling of iron ore and coal cargo from Chennai Port.
