An anchored but empty cargo vessel ran aground in a beach in Chennai

The powerful winds of a cyclone called ‘Nilam’ dragged a cargo ship, MT Pratibha Cauvery from off the Chennai Port where it had offloaded oil on Tuesday and it was anchored there. The vessel is a double hull oil tanker belonging to Pratibha Shipping Company Limited, Mumbai. The panic-stricken sailors tried to escape using lifeboats. One sailor, it is said, who jumped into the sea became an unfortunate victim of the fury of the winds and the waters. Still six sailors are reported missing. The Navy and the Coast Guard are engaged in search. The repeated warnings of the Coast Guard to the sailors to remain on board the ship proved futile; the sailors jumped into the lifeboats which capsized proving fatal to some. Commodore Amar K. Mahadevan, Naval Officer in Charge, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry said that aerial search could not be launched immediately because of the severe inclement weather.  Deputy Inspector-General of Coast Guard Mr.Gurudreep Singh said that ICGS Varuna had been deployed to reach the stranded ship and provide assistance. He said: “As of now there is no trace of the six missing persons. We have stationed adequate manpower and medical teams at the beach”.
