Mr.Ajith Singh, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, inaugurated a five-day Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday in New Delhi with the theme “Managing Air Transport Growth in the Asia Pacific Region through a Collaborative Approach to Safety, Security and Sustainability”. In his address, apart from covering matters of significance to the present, he also talked about the plans of the Government to develop 10 to 15 Greenfield air ports. He said that the Government has plans of modernizing about 50 non-metro air ports. The new airports at Chennai and Kolkata would be commissioned very soon. Referring to the growth in the aviation sector, he observed that “the huge middle class is growing, trade is growing, and India should achieve at least six percent GDP growth”. With reference to the controversial carbon tax imposed by the European Union which India opposed, he asked the delegates present to oppose any unilateral environment measures imposed by a State or group of states like EU-ETS (Emission Trading Scheme). He also made it very clear that, unlike what the pilots claim, the pilots might be getting their salaries late, “but for many months, they are getting paid regularly. They are being paid salaries regularly for the past five-six months. They are being paid every month”.
