Strike at Beypore Port called off temporarily

A week long labour unrest at Beypore Port came to a temporary stop after talks in the presence of the District Collector, Mr. K.V.Mohan Kumar on Tuesday. A sub-committee consisting of the Port Officer, the Senior Port Conservator and the District Labour Officer would study the demands of the labourers and submit a report within a week.  The labourers were on an indefinite strike demanding revision of wages and they were not for any unfair wages. The sub-committee would study the problems and come out with recommendations. The trade unions that took part in the discussion agreed to refrain from disrupting loading and unloading operations till the submission of the report by the sub-committee. Meanwhile, they obtained a temporary approval for a 37% hike in the existing loading and unloading fare of the metal. The trade union leaders were least in favour of the latest recommendation of the Labour Department to charge a common fare for loading and unloading about 129 kinds of goods. This recommendation, they argued, did not take into account the physical strain the labourers feel for every type of cargo. Moreover, they said such standardization would benefit only the ship agents and not the workers. During the strike, many cargo ships had to halt at the port for many days and any movement of cargo from Beypore to other destinations was not allowed by the striking workers.
