SCI takes delivery of Panamax bulk carrier

On October 25, 2012, the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) added one more bulk carrier to its fleet, m.v. Vishva Vijay; it is the third of the four Panamax Bulk Carriers ordered by SCI with STX (Dalian) Shipping Company Limited, China; the order was placed in August 2008. These Panamax bulk carriers were ordered to replace SCI’s Daewoo series of Handymax bulk carriers.  The Panamax vessels are of higher capacity of over 80,000 deadweight each. The bigger the vessels are, the greater is the volume of business.  The latest addition has a gross tonnage of 44,010 tonnes with deadweight of 80,312 tonnes. Built in accordance with the latest and most stringent international regulations, the vessel is classed with LR and IRS. This latest acquisition is meant to fulfill SCI’s plan to make itself felt as an effective and efficient national carrier on the path of growth. With this addition, the SCI’s fleet strength moves to 79 with a total deadweight of 5.77 million. As of now, the corporation has 20 vessels on order and five of them are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2012.
