Russian Navy plans to be regularly present in the Gulf of Aden

A Russian Defense Ministry’s spokesperson said that Russian Navy has developed a plan to make its regular presence possible in the Gulf of Aden and near the Horn of Africa for the next year. According to the plan, there would be three Russian Warships for 2013 on anti-piracy deployment. He said: “The ships will be sent from all fleets by rotation”. The primary activity of the ships will be to escort commercial ships from risky zones from the Gulf of Aden to the Arabian Sea and back. For this purpose, Russian Navy would use, based on their practical experience with the piracy “ocean going ships equipped with helicopters”, said a Navy spokesman. In fact, Russian Navy has been deploying anti-piracy assets since October 2008 and the Russians so far “have escorted over 700 convoys; none of the civil ships was excepted or lost”, said the Navy Official. Earlier, US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Political Military Affairs Mr. Thomas Kelly said that the American administration “very much valued” Russian contribution to international efforts in fighting piracy off Somalia.
