Pat for Port

1. Vasan dedicates LPG-import-export facilities

2. Hails Ennore Port for sustained growth since inception

Appreciating the Ennore Port Limited’s (EPL) sustained growth from a small coal handling port to become a huge hub for multi-cargo handling in just 10 years since its inception, Union Shipping Minister G. K. Vasan has congratulated the port management for taking apt initiatives at right time to cease business opportunity.

Addressing a gathering of officials from different ports and representatives of EXIM trade in the region during the dedication of LPG-import-export facilities, being developed at EPL, in Chennai on Oct. 10, Mr. Vasan said: “EPL’s excellent management team is taking all the initiatives to attract investments and execute projects for the development of the port, eventually leading to economic prosperity for our State (Tamil Nadu) and for our country.”

The Minister observed: “The Ennore Coal Port Project as it was described initially was conceived primarily to handle thermal coal required for the power plants for Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). However, its vast potential has been fully appreciated by the Government and EPL management and it is developing fast by way of commissioning one project after the other.”

Pitching for more and more private participation in port development projects in the country, he added: “The cargo handling facilities in the port are being developed mainly through private sector participation and this business model has enabled the Ennore Port to focus on port related infrastructure development in a timely manner.”

In addition to the Marine Liquid Terminal (that was dedicated to the nation during the ceremony), the Iron Ore & Non-TNEB Coal Terminals have been developed through private sector partnership at a total investment of more than Rs.1,000 crores, the Minister pointed out.

The landlord business model has, however, not led to any complacency on the part of EPL which has been alive to the market requirements, he noted.

Besides the projects executed by the port, projects like the Marine Liquid Terminal executed by M/s Ennore Tank Terminals Private Limited stands as a shining example for Public-Private Partnership and this module has ensured that the ports benefit from steady inflow of funds for development and also gain from the efficiency of the private sector partner in building, operating and managing berths and terminals at our major ports, the Minister said.

Besides others, Mr. Atulya Misra, Chairman of Chennai Port Trust; Mr. S. Velumani, Chairman and Managing Director of EPL; and Mr. A. Mallesh Rao, Managing Director of Ennore Tank Terminals Private Limited, spoke during the ceremony.
