Conciliatory talks failed at India Nehru Port

Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) is the country’s top container handler and it is likely to face a shut down from October 8 as the conciliatory talks to solve a labour dispute, held on Thursday, did not bear fruit. The labour unrest started with the local labour federations at APM Terminals (APMT) firmly demanding immediate reinstatement of four workers. The port authorities justified their disciplinary action against the workers who were accused of serious misconduct. Apart from the reinstatement of the four workers out of which three were union leaders, the officials said that the unions demanded during negotiations that the private terminal operator should hire 100 “project –affected people” from the area. Pointing out the serious adverse effect of the labour unrest, APMT observed: “Should we not be in a position to make a breakthrough, we expect container movements in and out of the terminal and JN Port area will be adversely impacted and thereby affecting terminal operations as well”.
