The Vizhinjam International seaport will develop the fishing harbor at Vizhinjam by providing the basic infrastructure. He added that it will also “upgrade Mullur UP School to a high school. The decision was approved by the director board on Wednesday. As part of developing the port, a port city plan has been envisaged. The environment report was presented at the meet presided by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy”.
Sources said that these new initiatives are meant to attract public support for the projects. The projects also include plans to develop a seafood park and a skill development centre.
The port officials said that the Pollution Control Board will have a public meeting where they will invite suggestions and objections from the public to EIA report. According to the official, “The final report, which will include minutes of the public meeting, will be submitted to MoEF for environmental clearance”.
Dredging, reclamation, construction of break-water will be taken up after getting the nod from MoEF and the port will follow the landlord port model. The port will follow PPP mode; a private operator who will be responsible for the terminal superstructure will operate and maintain it for a period of 30 years.
