Shreyas Shipping is a leader in coastal and feeder operations and its focus is on expansion in coastal shipping. Acquisition of ships being one of its plans, it recently pressed in service one more vessel connecting the Vallarpadam terminal. According to Mr.Ramesh S. Ramakrishnan, Chairman, Shreyas Shipping, the successful performance of Vallarpadam is dependent on the overall growth of Indian container trade as well as on its ability to offer both the competitive pricing and matching facilities that the other hub ports do offer. Cabotage law, he said, is a well thought out one that is prevalent in most developed countries. He has his own reasons not favouring the cabotage relaxation. The Indian tonnage deployed in the coastal traffic is manifold in capacity compared to the feeder volumes on offer. Moreover, the cabotage law , as per Merchant Shipping Act, does allow foreign tonnage by Indian ship owners if they have obtained permission from the Director General of Shipping. In brief, he clarified their stand by pointing out that they were not opposed to easing of cabotage but they were firm that there is no need for it.
