Nagpur to get one road-based inland container depot (ICD) soon

The Maharashtra State Warehousing Corporation (MSWC) has joined hands with Glocal ICD Private Limited to build a new inland container depot in Butibori and unlike the railway mode of transport used by the Container Corporations of India Limited (CONCOR), this new facility will be road-based. From MSWC,  Glocal has a four-hectare land and two warehouses of about 26,000 square feet in Butibori.  Though the infrastructure is ready, the clearance from the Central Government’s inter-ministerial committee is being waited for. As of now, CONCOR has the capacity to handle 7000 containers every month and once this new facility becomes operational, the capacity will increase by 3500, “thus taking the capacity of Nagpur region to 10,500 containers per month”, said Mr.DS Jha, Managing Director of Glocal. There are other vital advantages of this depot. Glocal will connect it with Visakhapatnam port on the east coast and this link will reduce the transit time from China by four to five days, thereby reducing the transport cost as well. According to Mr.Jha, this ICD will prove a great facility to those who transport minerals, ores, coke and coal since there are some restrictions on the transport of these materials by rail. Mr.S.P.Borse, Senior Regional Manager of MSWC said that the setting up of this new container depot was in keeping with the policy of the Centre which focused on reducing the congestion at the ports and he added: “Last year it decided to allow participation in this field to increase number of ICD”. While the retired chief commissioner of central excise and customs pointed out that the new facility was the need of the region, the President of the Butibori Manufacturers’ Association welcomed the development and said that it would give a boost to the export –import business of the region.
