MV Amsterdam Bridge fights fire off Mumbai coast

According to the Coast Guard Officials, a major fire broke out on a merchant vessel Amsterdam Bridge, bound for Colombo, off Mumbai coast. Though the fire is under control, the presence of dangerous cargo keeps things critical still. The ship caught fire yesterday near the Prongs Reef Lighthouse in South Mumbai. The sources claim that the crew of the vessel are safe and the vessel carries a total of 119 International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) and the vessel is of 54.405 tonnes. The Coast Guard Officials said that there had not been any oil spill though the vessel’s fuel tank had 2600 tonnes of heavy fuel. The Antigua and Barbuda flagged vessel discharged cargo on Friday Nava Sheva, JNPT and anchored at the inner anchorage. After loading containers, it left for Colombo which it was scheduled to reach the next day. According to the officials, the Coast Guard and the Naval fire fighting teams have gone on board the ship for a detailed assessment.
