Kolkata Port Trust solves the issue with ABG

Haldia Bulk Terminal (HBT) Private Limited handles berths 2 and 8 under a Public- Private-Partnership with Kolkata Port Trust and it is a Special Purpose Vehicle of ABG-LDA Bulk Handling Private Limited. HBT found the operations in two berths were not financially viable provided they handle about 9 million tonnes of cargo every year with 1000 employees, both full-time and casual, and the maintenance of the equipment. The company even decided to suspend operations unless they are assured of more cargo at their two berths. KoPT had no such legal binding so as to assure a certain quantity of cargo to HBT and they approached the Court seeking arbitration. But KoPT convened an urgent meeting to try to solve the issue and a source is quoted: “There was no violation of contractual agreement. We kept the state government and the local public representatives informed of our efforts. Considering the utilization of berths and the interest of trade, whether we can provide more vessels at berths 2 and 8 of HDC, provided the company adheres to all other legal and contractual obligations”.
