
In the inaugural address on Ports, Shipbuilding and Logistics at the Emerging Kerala-2012-Global Connect Conference, the Minister for Shipping Mr.G.K.Vasan said: “The Centre has sanctioned INR 750 crore ship repair unit proposal of Cochin Shipyard. The project was sanctioned yesterday”. A very appropriate announcement t made on the eve of Emerging Kerala reflects the Centre’s concern for development in states. The Centre has also identified Cochin Port Trust as one of the five major ports to be developed as hubs for tourism; the lighthouses in Kadalur Point and Vizhinjam will be promoted as tourist centers. Having found the public-private-partnership (PPP) mode very successful, he said the shipping ministry had approved of 25 PPP projects since 2009-10 with an investment of INR 14,000 crore. In developing the rail and road connectivity for the International Container Transshipment Terminal at Vallarpadam, the Centre has invested more than INR 1,700 crore. With reference to the relaxation in the cabotage law, the Minister said that the port officials had told him that they would double the traffic next year. With regard to the Kerala Government‘s proposal to set up a major port at Azhikal, it was under active consideration and it was studying the feasibility report of the technical committee. The Minister also urged the Kerala Government to divert cargo to non-major ports by using the coastal and inland waterways. For proper utilization, the Minister also pointed out that Inland Waterways Authority of India had promoted many terminals on the National Waterway 3, (between Kollam to Kottapuram and between Champakara and Udyogmandal).
