Haldia is in deep crisis

While the KoPT Board of Trustees was at finding ways to solve the issue at the Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), Haldia Bulk Terminals (HBT) Private Limited said that its workers were assaulted when they reported to work at berths 2 and 8. HBT is the special purpose vehicle of the LDA-ABG combine which is in charge of mechanized handling at berths 2 and 8. Earlier, HBT threatened to close down the operations at its berths 2 and 8 since it could not get sufficient cargo; KoPT sought the intervention of the Calcutta High Court. Through arbitration, KoPT agreed to diver more ships to HBT’s berths 2 and 8. This was not welcome by the workers at the other berths. They felt all the more hurt when HBT terminated 275 workers. Unrest sparked off there. Regarding assault on the workers of HBT, Mr.Manish Jain, officiating Chairman, KoPT, said: “I am not aware of any such incident involving KoPT employees.  If there was violence, it should have been reported to the police”. According to an official at KoPT, they do not expect any work to resume at berths 2 and 8 soon. The state government must take steps to put an end to this problem. He also added: “People are being incited to create trouble at HDC”. Under any circumstances, if KoPT is led to close down the operations at HDC, it is bound to affect the interests of West Bengal.
