Gateway Terminals workers to go on indefinite strike

A section of the employees of Gateway Terminals India (GTI) , one of the private  terminals of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, are likely to go on an indefinite strike demanding withdrawal of termination of three employees by GTI. The strike will definitely affect the cargo handling at GTI leading to inevitable consequences like congestion at the port and, in turn, forcing the shipping lines to impose surcharge, as in the earlier strike in May last.  GTI explained its stand in a statement, pointing out that the termination of the three employees, found guilty of misconduct, was decided upon after an independent enquiry. According to GTI, the employees had left quay-cranes un-parked and docked vessels without hatch covers. One of the three container terminals at JN port, GTI is a joint venture between APM Terminals and the Container Corporation of India; and it handles nearly 45% of the total cargo handled by the port.
