ABG Haldia Bulk Terminals (AHBT), a joint venture
between KoPT and ABG, having no sufficient cargo to handle, proposed to
stop its operations in berths 2 and 8; but, they reached a compromise so
that the operations would continue; KoPT would divert more cargo to the
berths 2 and 8. The compromise was arrived at through arbitration. A
Trinamool Congress-led trade union opposed the decision of KoPT and
launched agitation against it.
Mr. Suvendu Adhikari, Trinamool MP
from Tamluk said that KoPT, by giving preference to AHBT, “is forcing
shipping agents and cargo owners to divert ships to berth No 2 and 8.
Why should port authorities intervene in the process? If this goes on,
thousands of workers will lose their jobs”. He also said that there were
complaints from the berth users that KoPT was “diverting ships to
mechanized berths, even after allocating non-mechanized berths at lesser
handling charges”. A senior KoPT official, unwilling to be named, is
said to have observed: “It is unfortunate. If they feel KoPT is not
abiding by law, let them go to court”. KoPT has requested the State
Government to intervene into the matter.
