According to preliminary figures published by the Indian Ports Association (IPA), container throughput between April and August rose from 3.2 million TEUs to 3.3 million TEUs, when compared to the same period of previous year.
The total tonnage handled at India’s ports also increased from 49.4 Million Tonnes (MT) to 51.4 MT, representing a rise of 4%. India’s largest container facility, Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), saw volumes grow 2% to 1.8 MT, while the volumes of containers handled in Chennai remained relatively flat compared to the previous year, with the estimated port handling of 675,000 TEUs.
Tuticorin’s volumes grew from 196,000 TEUs to 201,000 TEUs, and Kolkata handled a total of 259,000 TEUs, up 16 per cent on 2011 levels. Last month, India’s ports handled a total of 670,000 TEUs, up 5% on the volumes handled in August 2011. In the first five months of fiscal 2012-13, India’s 12 State-owned ports saw 3.5% total fall in cargo tonnage as compared to last year to 229 million tonnes.
