Mechai Pattana School, Pattaya, Thailand, takes education to the rural children and its founder, Mechai Viravaidya created an opportunity for them to learn communication skills from the US Navy on Aug. 1. The sailors from submarines USS Emory S.Land (AS 39) and USS Buffalo (SSN 715) visited the school and spent some time playing games and teaching conversational English to the children. The Deputy Director of school said that many teachers could not speak English. He added: “Listening to the sailors talk, and talking to them, really increases the children’s confidence.” There was a great mutual enjoyment between the sailors and the children. Autumn Adams of USS Emory S. Land remarked: “My favourite part of the day was sitting with the kids and learning about each other.” The event was coordinated by USS Emory S. Land‘s Religious Ministries Department in collaboration with the Navy League of the United States Siam Council. Ten sailors from the submarines mentioned above volunteered their liberty time “to socialize and play games with the children”.
