Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) expects marine export to record a growth of 28% this fiscal, pinning its hopes on the rising demand for seafood in US and Europe in particular. MPEDA, coming under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is the major agency for the promotion of marine products in India. An MPEDA official said: “ We expect seafood exports to touch USD 4.5 billion 2012-13 due to increase in demand , mainly for Litopenaeus Vannamei shrimp and Black Tiger shrimp in the US and European markets”. Of India’s total seafood export, 45% of the export depends on and is accounted for by the markets in the US and Europe. The two kinds of shrimps which are edible crustaceans top the list, especially in the markets from Japan, China, US and Europe. It is pointed out that the seafood export saw a welcome growth of 15% more in the first quarter of April-June compared with the same quarter last fiscal. According to the official, the infrastructure is being updated to encourage production of value-added items.
